Queenscliff Safety Wrap: Theft, Fallen Powerlines and a Headland Rescue

Ambulance and police on scene

A theft on Queenscliff Road and fallen powerlines brought police and emergency crews into Queenscliff during August, following a major rescue at the headland the previous month. Nearby in North Manly, police were also called to a reported assault.

There was some good news on the safety front, too, with a new walking and cycling bridge opening over Manly Lagoon and removing a longstanding pinch point on a busy local route.

Two Incidents on Queenscliff Road

Queenscliff Road featured in two separate call-outs during the first half of August.

Shortly before 7.30pm on Monday, 3 August, NSW Police received a report that property had been stolen from premises on the road. No further details about the circumstances were included in the report.

A week later, the problem was overhead rather than on the ground.

Just after 9.00am on Monday, 10 August, police and firefighters from Manly Station were called after powerlines came down across Queenscliff Road.

Officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command managed traffic while Ausgrid attended to the damaged lines and carried out repairs.

Headland Fall Brought a Major Rescue Response

The most serious recent emergency in Queenscliff came a month earlier, on Friday, 3 July.

A 16-year-old boy fell between five and eight metres onto the rock platform at Queenscliff Headland after losing his footing while scaling the cliff face with a friend.

It prompted a sizeable response. Police, firefighters from Manly and Narrabeen and five NSW Ambulance crews attended, while the Toll NSW Ambulance Rescue Helicopter was brought in to reach the teenager on the Freshwater side of the headland.

Paramedics treated a head laceration and assessed him for other injuries before he was winched from the rocks and flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.

A Safer Way Across Manly Lagoon

Not everything on the local safety front involved an emergency response.

On 20 August, the new pedestrian and cycle bridge over Manly Lagoon opened between Aitken Avenue and Hinkler Park.

At four metres wide, it replaces the need to negotiate the narrow footpath beside busy Pittwater Road at what had become a longstanding choke point on the shared route between Manly and Warringah Mall.

The new crossing provides a safer connection for people walking and riding through the area.

Police Called to North Manly

Just beyond Queenscliff, police were called to Austral Avenue in neighbouring North Manly shortly before 11.00am on Tuesday, 11 August.

The call followed a report that a person had been assaulted. No further details about the circumstances were included in the police report.
